Dropdown List
The dropdown list is used to offer a choice of answers from a long list of available options.
In the first field, enter the title of your question, then choose whether this question should be mandatory or not.
To add an answer option, simply click on the dedicated button. You can repeat the operation as many times as necessary.
Customizing Answer Options
By clicking on the gear icon, you can display an option in bold, fix its position (meaning if you choose random display in the "advanced settings" tab of your item, it will always remain in the same position.
For example, for an option like "Other", it is advisable to fix the option at the bottom of your list).
- The internal value allows you to indicate a custom value for statistical processing purposes, which is not visible to your respondents. For example, if your participant chooses an answer from a list of products, the internal value could be the reference of the selected product by the client.
- The category allows you to group different answer options to assign a profile to your respondent. A category could, for example, be one of your personas.
- The weight is a number that allows you to emphasize or de-emphasize certain responses. For example, you could assign a higher weight to an option because it represents an important element for you. The sum of weights or an average can be calculated at the end of the questionnaire to assign a score to your respondent.
Setting Display Conditions for Your Option.
You can define display conditions for your option by clicking on the gear icon with an eye. This way, your respondent selects an answer only from the options that concern them and they are allowed to see.
For example, if you offer sports articles through the options, the "rugby ball" option could only be displayed if the answer to the previous question "Which sports activity do you regularly practice" was "rugby".
Display conditions, segment and segment group, attributes, questionnaire variables, random condition (e.g., to display the option half the time), date, location, source, platform (mobile, tablet, or PC), and participant's language are also available. These conditions can be combined with each other.
All these options are obviously not mandatory but they allow you to finely customize the flow of your questionnaires, to easily increase the number of responses collected and their quality.
Organizing the Order of Options
You can organize the order of your options, simply by dragging/dropping each of them.
Associate a label with the item
In the advanced settings tab, you have the option to assign a label. This helps you consolidate responses across multiple questions even if they are in different campaigns.
You can choose whether or not to default to selecting the first option in your dropdown list, and also set a random order for your options, except for those you have previously fixed.
Note that these settings, depending on their configuration, can reduce or increase the influence you have on the response choices of your participants.
Custom Dropdown List
The custom dropdown list allows you to import your own data file to automatically generate response options. You can always check the configuration details of a list in the dedicated article "How to create custom dropdown lists?"
Image Choice List
The image choice list allows your respondents to select images to answer your questions. For example, choosing one of your products by displaying a photo of each, or indicating a travel destination by showing different landscapes. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination!
In addition to images, you can display their respective labels to ensure that your participant has no doubts when selecting their response.
To do this, you need to:
- Access the relevant question
- Click on "Advanced settings"
- Select "Yes" for "Display label"
We recommend considering the number of displayed options to determine their size. Don't hesitate to preview your questionnaire before distributing it!
Like dropdown lists or checkboxes, you can condition or customize response options :
- Bold Display: bold this response option,
- Fix Its Position: if you choose a random display of your options in the advanced settings of your elements, this option will always remain in the same position. For example, for an option like "Other", it's advisable to fix it at the bottom of your list,
- Make an Exclusive Option: Exclusivity allows you to define an option as the only choice if selected, in cases where you allow respondents to select multiple answers. For example, if you provide the option "None" and allow multiple selections, it's necessary to make this option exclusive.
You can also add:
- Internal Value which allows you to specify a customized value for statistical processing purposes, not visible to your respondents. For example, if your participant chooses a product from a list, the internal value could be the reference number of the selected product.
- A Category which groups different response options to assign a profile to your respondent. A category could, for example, be one of your personas.
- A Weight, either a number or figure, allows you to prioritize or de-emphasize certain responses. For example, you might assign a higher weight to an option because it's particularly important. The sum of weights or an average can be calculated at the end of the questionnaire to assign a score to your respondent.
Checkboxes
The checkbox element displays all available options, which is ideal when you allow your participant to select multiple response options. If you restrict to a single response (single choice), we recommend using a dropdown list for more than 8 choices.
You can also assign an order to your responses so that your participants rank the response options according to their preference. This option also works with image choice lists.
Like dropdown lists or checkboxes, you can condition or customize response options:
- Bold Display: bold this response option,
- Fix Its Position: meaning that if you choose a random display of your options, this option will always remain in the same position. For example, for an option like "Other", it's advisable to fix it at the bottom of your list.
- A weight: A number that allows you to enhance or diminish the value of certain responses. For example, you could assign a higher weight to an option because it represents an important element for you. The sum of weights or an average can be calculated at the end of the questionnaire to assign a score to your respondent.
Change the format of a drop-down list, a choice list with images, or checkboxes:
Once you have created your question in drop-down list, choice list with images, or checkboxes format, you can easily change its format by clicking on its icon, then selecting the format of your choice:
Opt in
The Opt in element helps you obtain the user's consent so that you can use their data, most often to contact them via email for communication purposes. In France, all communication between a company and an individual must be subject to prior agreement from the recipient.
Values will be 0 if not checked and 1 if checked.
A response option can be checked by default.
List of countries
The list of countries in the world allows your participant to choose a country. You can pre-select the country or not to facilitate the respondent's choice.
Multi-questions
The multi-question element is used to generate a series of questions of the same type, with multiple-choice response options, such as "Checkboxes," "Rating Scale," or "CSat".
Simply click on the icon “Add an item” (similar to adding a sub-question), and the chosen question type will automatically appear.
For each question, you can choose the range of the rating scale (from 2 to 10) and finally the type of display for the scale: "Stars," "Smileys," "Numbers," or "Customize."
Tip: If the next question needs to be set up the same way, you can duplicate the question.
For an overview of the questions, you can activate the “Group items” option in the advanced settings of your multi-questions.
This way, you offer your respondents an overview of all the questions contained in the multi-questions:
Matrix
The matrix element is used to generate a series of questions of the same type with multiple-choice response options, such as "Checkbox", "Rating Scale", or "CSat". The response options are the same for all questions (unlike multi-questions).
This allows displaying a question in a "table" format for completion.
Note: To display this in a table format, only 5 items should be present in the question. From the 6th item onwards, the display will automatically switch to lists.
You can choose the scale range (from 2 to 10) and finally the type of display for the scale that will apply to each sub-question: "Stars", "Smileys", "Numbers", or "Customize".
Once validated, you will be returned to the questionnaire. At this point, simply click on the icon “Add an element” (similar to adding a sub-question).
Automatically, the chosen question type will appear. Here you can enter the question title and adjust the settings as needed.
Tip: If the next question needs to be set the same way, you can duplicate the question.
